The Op Shop Directory started out as an idea, an idea formed while driving. What if there is a website that lists all the Op Shops in the country.
After getting home and realising that there wasn’t a web site fulfilling that need I decided to make one.
The initial website has had a few design changes over the years, but the core has remained the same.
Some of the backend stuff is no longer supported and I wanted to make it more friendly for visitors to the site.
So after two different new versions, lots of work and problems with hosting, the new site is here.
Check out the New Site Info page to learn about some of the differences with this new version.
As well as updating the look of the website, I went through and added and modified as many Op Shops I could find, this grew the site from 380 to over 500, with many more still needed to be added I’m sure.
A lot of Op Shops don’t have opening hours listed, so the next step is to contact thos Op Shops and update those details.
It will take a while to get all of them up to date, but good things take time.
I also have another couple of ideas rattling around, and I am hoping to grow the community of Op Shoppers via the website and the Facebook page.
The post New Website is HERE appeared first on Op Shop Directory NZ.
So it has been one week since the new site launched and so far things have been going pretty smoothly to be honest.
8 new Op Shops have been added to the site, bringing the total up to an awesome 522 now.
Comments have been left for some of the Op Shops but more the merrier, so if you’rereading this make sure to comment and rate the Op Shops you like.
I’ve set up a givealittle page to help offset some of the costs running a website incurs, and to also hopefully help with some of the extras I can add to the site but they cost money.
Massive thanks to everyone who has donated something already, you can donate as little as $1 and so far we are sitting on the hefty sum of $11
The site also has the ability to have your listing upgraded, to include a photo to replace the blue image with the white logo on it, and up to 5 photos of your shop within your listing.
There is a yearly cost for this to happen, but it isn’t much and I think it is well worth it from an advertising perspective, reaching a targeted audience. I’ll put more up on the site about this once the givealittle thing has finished.
But to showcase how it looks, I want to offer a free fancy listing to one deserving Op Shop out there. All you need to do is let me know in the comments below if you are interested, to be eligible you need to be able to provide up to 6 photos of your Op Shop that are nice and clear.
I’ll pick one Op Shop and use them as the showcase.
Also, let me know what else you would like to see in this blog or over on the Facebook page by leaving a comment below.
Happy Op Shopping everyone.
The post First week on the new site appeared first on Op Shop Directory NZ.
Hello
September is shaping up as a good one here at the Op Shop Directory. In the last week, I have added an extra 15 Op Shops to the website, 15!!!. That is awesome.
Thanks to everyone that submits, comments and rates the Op Shops. This helps the website grow and gives valuable feedback to the Op Shops themselves, which in turn helps people find Op Shops in their area which puts money back into the community and helps support a wide range of charities and causes in NZ. So well done all of you.
I have also been working with the Red Cross to make sure their listings are all up to date and relevant.
While helping Op Shops get more exposure, and helping people find more Op Shops you may be wondering how many people actually use the site, well I can’t give you an exact figure for September just yet, but on average it is 10,000 awesome amazing people a month check out the Op Shop Directory.
You may or may not know that I have a Givealittle page running at the moment, and it has 6 days left to run. And currently it is at the grand total of $11.
If you’d like to help out and contribute to the Op Shop Directory’s running costs then please click on the Givealittle page and donate from as little as $1.
If you wondering where that money will go, here is a breakdown of some costs I need to cover:
The Facebook page is growing every day with 807 great people liking it as I write this. I am thinking of doing some giveaways when it reaches 1000 people. If you have an idea of what you would like me to give away, let me know in the comments below and I will see what I can do.
For the next couple of blog posts, I am going to be writing some tips and hints for Op Shopping. If you have any that you would like to share, please leave a comment below or get in touch via the Contact Page.
That is it for this update, I hope everything i well with you. Remember to leave comments and rate the Op Shops.
Until next time, happy Op Shopping.
The post How September is Shaping Up appeared first on Op Shop Directory NZ.
I’ve had a lot of people ask lately about getting photos onto their listing on the website. So I put together a page explaining how you can get your photos on your listing.
The Op Shop Directory has never been about making money, it has been about helping people find Op Shops and helping Op Shops get known by providing them a platform they can offer information. I think I have achieved that, especially with the new look of the website.
After doing some personal development work at my last job I worked out that money doesn’t motivate me as much as it does for other people. Hence when I started the Op Shop directory it was more about helping people out.
As the site has grown there have been costs, and there are ongoing costs as well, the best option for everyone was charging for the addition of photos to a listing.
Running an Op Shop is a business, and part of a business’s cost could be advertising. For the most part I feel Op Shops get a pretty good deal for having their information on the Directory and being able to update that information whenever they want just by sending me an email all for free, something that I’m not going to change.
I went back and forth with what the cost for adding images to the site could be, and I think I have come up with a fair price. It works out to be around $1.25 a week, cheaper than a cup of coffee.
As well as having photos on your listing you will be put into the rotation of featured listings which appear first on the website and at the top of search listings.
A bunch of Op Shops were added to the site making the total now 556. There were some deletions due to change of locations and closed stores as well, thanks to everyone that submitted and kept their Op Shop details up to date.
6500 people visited the site in October, with 14,004 page views with great referrals from other websites, like being mentioned in the Trademe Message Boards.
I have a couple of things to work out, but in the next week or two I am going to have something that you can help out with. Hopefully everyone gets on board and really supports it, I think you will.
The post October Round Up appeared first on Op Shop Directory NZ.
November was a bit down in page views with 13,697 page impressions for the month, while being down around 600 there were some massive days of visitors with Fridays being the most popular day.
I’ve been kept busy with a lot of projects on the go all at once, I think 2016 will be the year of trying to juggle everything and get some better processes in place to cope with it all.
I had an idea for something to do around this time, but I have been held up by a 3rd party and am going to have to push it out until 2016. Which allows me more time to organise things and hopefully make it better. More news on that in the new year hopefully.
6 more op shops have been added to the directory since last months update, with many more getting slight updates to their listings.
Also the first listing with photos is up on the directory now too, and it looks really good.
It is a crazy time of the year with a lot happening, I will still be around but there may be a few delays in replying, depending on where I am and what I am doing.
Thanks for being part of the Op Shop Community.
The post November Round Up appeared first on Op Shop Directory NZ.
It’s great to see the amount of comments appearing on the website from awesome Op Shoppers. One of the latest was on the November blog post, prompting me to write something a bit more recent.
There are currently 110 comments and ratings on the website, with the majority from people with very nice things to say about the Op Shops they have visited, there are some bad comments as well with the two biggest complaints being poor customer service and crazy pricing and some not so nice tactics going on in some shops. Please make sure you rate and comment on the Op Shops you visit, it really helps other Op Shoppers.
The page has had a lot more likes over the last couple of months with more people discovering the website. With 920 likes on the page we are fast approaching the 1000 mark. Remind me to sort out something awesome when we reach that number. Check it out here.
People seem to be liking the posts on Mondays and Fridays and with liking and sharing you are helping the page get a little bit more exposure. The more people like and share the more Facebook actually shows the posts to people.
Visitors to the site are tracking well with most days getting between 500 – 800 page views, the busiest day is always Fridays.
In between what seems like a million other projects I am also working on how to do the Op Shop of the Year award.
I have the award made up and am currently thinking about the process to decide on the best Op Shop out there judged by you, the Op Shoppers. More information on this will be out next month on the site and on the Facebook page. If you have any ideas etc please get in touch.
Let me know if there is anything else you would like to see, I’ve got a couple of other ideas, but the trick is trying to find the time to do everything.
